Finding Love After Separation

The Courage to Love Again

By Sarah Moon, founder of Clean Break. Adapted from her article featured in Nelson Magazine.

When a long-term relationship ends, it can feel as though the ground has shifted beneath you. Familiar routines disappear. The future you imagined looks different. And the thought of trusting someone with your heart again might feel a very long way off.

If finding love after separation feels impossible right now, you don’t need to force yourself to feel differently. You’re allowed to be cautious. You’re allowed to take your time.

But I hope you’ll leave a little room for this possibility: the end of one relationship doesn’t have to mean the end of love in your life.

Give yourself room to heal

“I’m never doing that again.”

It’s something many people say after a painful breakup. I understand the instinct. When you’ve been hurt, protecting yourself makes sense.

You don’t need to decide today whether you’ll ever want another relationship. For now, there is value in getting to know yourself again: what matters to you, what helps you feel settled, and what you need as you move forward.

Love can remain part of your life through friendship, family and the everyday kindness of people who care about you.

Carry your wisdom into what comes next

A future relationship doesn’t need to look like the one that ended.

Taking time to reflect can help you recognise patterns you don’t want to repeat. Perhaps you understand your needs more clearly now. Perhaps you’re learning to speak up earlier, listen differently or set boundaries with greater confidence.

You might start by asking yourself:

  • What helped me feel valued and respected?
  • Which needs did I find difficult to express?
  • What would I want to approach differently in a future relationship?

These questions can help you understand what you want to carry forward and what you’re ready to leave behind.

Why I believe in second chances

I write about this as a lawyer, but also as someone who has experienced the grace of a second chance.

The relationship my husband and I share today has been shaped by what we learned from our earlier relationships and from witnessing our parents’ relationship breakdowns. Those experiences taught us what matters to us and how much honesty and care contribute to a relationship.

I’m a divorce lawyer who also happens to be a marriage celebrant. There’s a reason for that: I still believe in love.

Notice the ordinary moments

Sometimes the most meaningful parts of a relationship are wonderfully ordinary.

A morning cuppa together. Easy laughter. Feeling heard after a difficult day. The comfort of being known and appreciated.

After loss, those moments can take on a different meaning. You may find yourself noticing them more, appreciating them more and choosing to care for them more deliberately.

Finding love after separation can mean approaching connection with a clearer understanding of yourself, while allowing something new to unfold in its own time.

Take your next step at your own pace

There’s no deadline for opening your heart again. A fulfilling next chapter can take many forms, and you get to decide what feels right for you.

If you’re navigating the practical side of separation, support is available too. At Clean Break, we help you understand your legal and financial options so you can make informed decisions about what comes next.
